Police apprehends five kidnappers in Rivers

Operatives of the Inspector General of Police’ (IGP) Intelligence Response Team (IRT) have arrested five suspected kidnappers terrorising Port Harcourt, the Rivers State.

They are Gift Attah, 26, alias Okwulogu, Steven Ogbuka,25, Chimele Chinda, 26, alias Aeroplane, Daddy Stephen, 33, alias Marshal and Atayero Abiodun, 48.

Their arrest followed the abduction and eventual release of a woman, Mrs. Blessing Kime.

The suspects allegedly collected an undisclosed amount as ransom before releasing the woman.

The victim was kidnapped in her church at Rumuekini in Obio-Akpor local government area of the state on June 16.

It was gathered that the IRT operatives first apprehended Attah, said to be the leader of the gang as well as head of Iceland confraternity on June 27, and his confessions led to the arrest of others.

Attah, the police said, was arrested around 11:40 a.m. at Rumuakunde community in Emohua local government area of the stae, adding that N450,000, alleged to be part of the ransom was recovered from him.

According to the police, Ogbuka admitted he was one of the three men who entered the church to kidnap the woman.

He also confessed that he was in charge of the den where the woman was held hostage, adding that he rented the gang’s AK47 rifle from the Chief Security Officer (CSO) of Rumuekini Community, Chinda.

Chinda, a final year student at the University of Port Harcourt (UNIPORT), the police said, confessed to being an errand boy to Attah and acted as an armourer to secure the AK47 rifle until they were ready for operation.

Abiodun reportedly confessed that he prepared charms for the gang and collected N150,000 as his share from the loot.
