Police apprehends herdsman over armed robbery in Abia

The Abia police command has commended the residents of the state for the timely information they have been giving to the command which has led to the numerous successes they have recorded in combating heinous crimes.

Speaking in Umuahia while parading a Fulani herdsman who was arrested while trying to snatch a motorbike from its owner Uyime Saturday, the state Commissioner of Police (CP) Leye Oyebade said that the suspect Adamu Abubakar was arrested with a locally made pistol.

Oyebade said that Saturday a commercial motorcycle rider who lives at Rubber Research Institute Akwaette reported that he had conveyed two passengers Abubakar and his colleague who is at large from Azumiiri to Akwaette when they attacked him.

He said, “Along the way the duo attempted to snatch his motorcycle from him and as he resisted they shot him and he later reported the matter to the police at Akwaette police division”.

“The police with the cooperation of the local vigilante group combed the area and arrested Adamu Abubakar with one cut to size locally made pistol with live cartridges while his accomplice who he gave his name as Suleiman Abubakar escaped”.

In an interaction with newsmen, Adamu said that he was taking care of their cows when he heard a gunshot and he asked Suleiman why the shooting, “He said that he shot at people who were trying to steal their cows and I told him that there was nobody around for the shot”.

Adamu said that the cows belong to his father in Taraba state and that when he found out that Suleiman had shot somebody instead of what he acclaimed to have shot to scare thieves away that he warned him against such acts.

The Abia CP said that his men were able to rescue a kidnapped victim within few hours after his kidnap, “This success of rescuing the victim Ejiogu Ugochukwu was one of the benefits of the members of the public who gave us information freely”.

Oyebade said that his men got information that Ugochukwu of Umueze Ibeku, Umuahia north council area of the state was abducted by five unknown armed men, “Detectives of the anti-kidnapping squad moved in and arrested Orji Uka of Ekoli Eda in Afikpo north council area of Ebonyi state”.

The CP said that Uka was arrested while trying to collect the ransom money without knowing that it was a bait set by the police to arrest those behind the kidnap incident.

He said, “Uka was arrested at the point of collecting the one million naira ransom at Nekede/Ihiagwa, Owerri west local government area of Imo state and the suspect confessed to the crime which led to the rescue of the victim”.

Uka while speaking with newsmen said that one of his friends called him that there is a job they will do that will give him money to start business, “My friend brought a car which I drove to kidnap the victim and when they could not collect the ransom they asked me to go and collect it when the police arrested me”.

Oyebade said that his men also rescued kidnapped passengers of a Toyota Sienna which was snatched along Aba-Umuahia side of the expressway, “Our patrol team moved in and intercepted the vehicle along Ekeakpara road heading towards Omuma in Rivers state”.

He said that the hoodlums on sighting the police fled into the bush abandoning the kidnapped passengers and the vehicle, “During a search on the vehicle, one pump action rifle with two cartridges were recovered”.

The CP gave a list of vehicles the command had recovered within the period under review, one Suzuki mini bus with the number SSM 731 ZJ, Toyota Lexus RX 300 SSM 906 TP, Toyota RAV 4 RBC 785 BT, Toyota Camry SMK 512 EM, Nissan Xterra GGJ 388 AA and Nissan Almera EPE 706 DX
