[SOUTH AFRICA]FNB hit by second heist

About R1.7 million as well as valuables kept in safety deposit boxes have been stolen from an FNB Branch in Parktown, Johannesburg.

The specialised crime fighting unit, the Hawks, say the incident took place on New Year's Eve, but the matter was only reported on Tuesday.

This is the second FNB branch to be hit by a robbery in recent weeks.

In December, more than 300 safety deposit boxes were stolen at the bank's Randburg branch in the north of Johannesburg. The boxes were found emptied and abandoned in Soweto.

Gauteng Hawks Spokesperson, Carol Mulamu, says no arrests have been made.

“At the moment, we are working hand in hand with the internal and external forensics to determine the occurrence of these incidents. No arrests have been made as yet, but we are following up on information that will assist us to bring the perpetrators to book.”
